The Critical Difference — Corrective vs Holding Bracing

Holding Braces (e.g., Boston Brace / TLSO): These are standard-sized rigid frames commonly prescribed in the public health system. They work by applying pressure at contact points to hold the curve from worsening. They do not attempt spinal correction, only containment.

Corrective Braces (e.g., ScoliBrace): ScoliBrace uses a mirror-image correction principle. By capturing a 3D scan of the patient's posture, the brace is designed to actively guide the spine in the direction of correction. The landmark BRAIST study (NEJM, 2013) established that modern bracing reduced the risk of surgery by 24 percentage points compared to observation alone, with success rates above 90% when worn for 13+ hours per day.

Who Is a Bracing Candidate?

Adolescents: Bracing is highly effective during active growth spurts (Risser 0–3). ScoliBrace is typically worn for 16–23 hours per day and combined with SEAS exercises to strengthen muscles for support when the brace is removed.
