To understand why the Schroth Method works differently from standard physiotherapy or generic exercise, it helps to understand the nature of scoliosis and kyphosis as three-dimensional deformities. A scoliosis curve is not simply a sideways bend - it involves rotation of the vertebrae and asymmetric changes to the ribs, thorax, and surrounding musculature.
The defining characteristic of the Schroth Method is rotational angular breathing (RAB), which serves as the primary correction tool. In Schroth, the patient learns to direct breath specifically into the concave side of the scoliosis curve - the shortened, compressed side that needs expansion.
When Schroth Is the Right Choice - Clinical Indications
The Schroth Method and SEAS are different clinical tools, not competing approaches. Both are accredited specialist scoliosis exercise systems recognised by SOSORT. The Schroth Method is the primary exercise recommendation for thoracic and thoracolumbar scoliosis curves with a significant rotational component, and for Scheuermann's kyphosis.
The reason Schroth works particularly well for Scheuermann's kyphosis is the match between the method's mechanism and the condition's pathology. Scheuermann's involves stiffness and anterior compression of the thoracic vertebrae. Schroth's rotational angular breathing directly addresses this.
